“Thistles, Weeds, and You” | Romans 8:18-27, Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43

Sermon Discussion Questions: Thistles, Weeds, and You

1) Discuss some of the types of “spiritual” or “worldly” weeds that grow in the wheat fields of Christianity in our nation and the world. If you are willing, describe some that grow in your own heart.

2) Now, it might be nice to spray ROUND UP on those weeds. Big problem though. In the process we might kill some of the wheat also. That’s no good. So discuss how we can do battle against the weeds without harming the wheat.

3) A combine is the farm machine that when it’s harvest time goes through the field and harvests both weeds and wheat and the genius of the machine (and why it costs so much) is that it can separate weeds and wheat........the wheat goes to market and the weeds are discarded. Talk about the harvest of eternity.

4) Yet, we don’t have to wait for the eternal harvest. The company that makes my lawn beautiful tells me that the best fight against weeds is to have strong grass.......with deep roots.......that spreads and grows and leaves no room for the weeds. Discuss the role healthy wheat can play in overcoming the weeds. Yes, and even discuss the ways we can pull out the weeds (or hoe them to death) if we are a good wheat farmer.
